The book Creativity. Inc. , by Ed Catmull with Amy Wallace, is the chronological journey of Ed Catmul and Pixar from the early days until today. The best part of reading Creativity, Inc is that you know that Ed Catmull isn’t just talking the talk, he’s walking the walk. This book is separated into 4 categories: Getting Started, Protecting The New, Building and Sustaining and Testing What We Know. When Ed Catmul was younger he had two unconventional heroes for a young boy; Walt Disney and Albert Einstein. Ed felt they represented the two poles of creativity, Disney was about inventing the new and Einstein was a master of explaining (pg 7). Ed always wanted to be animator, but he really didn’t know how to go about becoming an animator,†¦show more content†¦Ed also talks about the Suitcase vs the handle – ideas are just handles – suitcase is where the real depth and gravity of the meaning of the sentence. Great people or great ideas? Ed feels great people with good ideas is much more powerful than mediocre team with the great ideas because great ideas will come from great people. When faced with a challenge you need to get smarter, the way to get smart is to hire/get or around smarter people. Always take a chance on the better even it seems threating, even if chances of failure might be high. He’s made a policy to of trying to hire people who are smarter than he is. The obvious payoffs of exceptional people are that they innovate, excel and generally make your company and you look good. P23. In the section Protecting The New, Ed discusses honesty and candor, fear and failure, his version of the hungry beast and ugly baby, change and randomness and the hidden. One of the key exercises Ed implements is the Braintrust, which are regular meetings where there is no authority in the room and they are all there to solve problems. He emphasizes on being candid and honest with each other, candid feedback. It works on the idea that any person who takes a complicated project would inevitably get lost because of narrow focus. He feels candid builds trust and empathy. One of my favorite parts of this book is Fear and Failure – there is No success without failure. The county is seeing this gap start to close over time, however, research shows that women are far more likely than men to leave their occupations, either temporarily or even permanently, to take care of their children (Patten, 2015). Animal Testing Paper Essay Animal testing is not a new thing. For many centuries scientists and testers in research have used animals of all kinds. Most of the animals are small ones like rodents rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils. Some dogs, cats and a variety of goats, monkeys and rabbits have also been used. The animal rights issue is an emotional one. For decades the value of animal research has been grossly overrated. Although researchers claim that they depend on animal test data to achieve medical advances, we should demand other means of research and there should be laws assuring a minimum level of animal protection because testing on animals is cruel, inhumane, and often unnecessary. The American Medical Association has stated that it believes that research involving animals is essential to maintaining and improving the health of human beings. They point out that all advances in medical science in the 20th century, from antibiotics to organ transplants, has been achieved either directly or indirectly t hrough the use of animals in laboratory experiments. Arguments for animal experimentation may question the morality, necessity, and validity of these studies. The moral issue on animal experimentations concerns the need to protect human life and to improve the quality of life. The gains in human health and well being outweigh the cost in animal suffering (which nonetheless should be kept to a minimum), in this viewpoint. It would be immoral to conduct such tests on humans, and so animals serve as our stand-ins for many kinds of testing and research. Those who support animal testing may care deeply about animals but don’t place them on an equal status with humans. Research on animals may be deemed necessary for a variety of reasons: to develop vaccines and treatments and cures for diseases, to ensure that new products are safe to use. Such as making sure that they won’t blind us, burn our skin, or even kill us (which did happen in several instances, before product safety testing was required by law); and to help students, especially prospective doctors, veterinarians, and so on, learn their way around a body. Animals do make good research subjects for many purposes and research on them can tell us a great deal about ourselves. Animals are, in many ways, biologically similar to humans and are susceptible to many of the same health problems.Some species may serve as particularly good models for certain aspects of human health or physiology. Much of what we know about the immune system, for example, has come from studies with mice, and much of what we know about the cardiovascular system has come from studies with dogs. Many heart surgery techniques, such as coronary bypass surgery, artificial heart valve insertion, and pacemaker implants, were studied first in dogs before being used in people. Animals may make even better research subjects than humans in some regards. For example, many species have relatively short life cycles, so they can be studied throughout their entire life span or across several generations. Furthermore, scientists can control certain aspects of an animal’s environment, diet, temperature, lighting, and so on, more easily than would be possible with people. Supporters of the use of animals in research argue that alternative methods can’t fully replace the use of animals, and may never do so. Neither cells grown outside a body nor computer programs can predict the complex interactions that occur in an entire living system. Countless medical treatments, techniques, and technologies have come about, at least in part, through animal experimentation. The development of immunization against such diseases as polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles, rubella, pertussis, and hepatitis all involved research on animals, as did the discovery of insulin and the study of diabetes. Douglas’s speech regarding the Fourth of July expressed heartache, pain, embarrassment, and humiliation. To those sitting before him, he let it be known that he was a former slave, and that they were the only ones who truly benefited from Independence Day. Why did they call upon Frederick Douglas to speak that day? This is the question he was asking, nonetheless, he expressed how he felt regarding this holiday. Speaking with simple eloquence, Douglas asked whites how they could expect him to feel joy, when his people had only experienced pain and suffering. He knew that the commemorating of Independence Day was to celebrate freedom and liberty, but for his people, this couldn’t be because they were not free. His people were still struggling, picking cotton, eating scraps, being whipped, and being treated as animals. There was no independence day for them, thus there was no reason for them to celebrate. He believed that the holiday was a joke for his people and mockery of his race. As I journey through Douglas’s speech given that day, I realize that many black people celebrate the Fourth of July without knowing the true meaning behind it. Some may know that it’s ‘Independence Day’, others know nothing. They just know that it is time to light fireworks, have barbeques and have a good time. I feel as though we as a race have been celebrating a holiday that was not meant for us in the first place. The Fourth of July was a day for whites. Blacks were only included so that the mistreatment to them could be ignored. Why do we celebrate this day? Why do we acknowledge it as if it applies us? I’m guessing because it’s a holiday and holidays are to celebrate, simple as that. Frederick Douglas proved his point. His speech was coherent, thought-provoking and profoundly insightful. One of his statements was that, America is unlike any other in their shameless hypocrisy. I say this because here they have celebrated their freedom and independence since 1776, while there are men  shackled to chains, forced to do their labor, fighting for their humanity in this land. It’s ironic because they called upon him to rejoice in a holiday that did not include him or his people, and he let them know it. Some may feel that his response was in appropriate and somewhat dangerous, but in actuality his response was more real than real could get. Asking a former slave who had to buy his way out of freedom to speak at such in engagement is mockery in itself. To the slave, the Fourth of July is a mockery. In closing let me say that Frederick Douglas’s speech took a unique approach in that he came from a perspective different from those to whom he spoke. Although the speech may have not have meant much to the beneficiaries of Independence Day in the room that day, it left an unforgettable impression. A former slave and having been a part of the abolitionist movement, Douglas felt the pain that his people were enduring and was clear in expressing it.
